Independent Expert Group on Mobile PhonesOpen MeetingsThursday 20 January 2000 |
Open MeetingHome > Open Meetings > Cardiff > Announcement > Thursday 20 January 2000The Government has set up an Expert Group to look at evidence for any health effects from the use of mobile phones and from the siting of mobile phone masts. Sir William Stewart, Chairman of the Expert Group, says: This is an important task, especially as the latest figures indicate that in the UK there are now 24 million mobile phones in use and 350 million world-wide. Also, to make sure the system works properly, more masts are being erected. Mobile phones are becoming an essential part of modern life and we need to know whether or not there are any adverse health effects caused by their use or from the masts. If there are risks we then need to be sure that appropriate steps are taken to minimise these. The Expert Group is holding a number of open meetings around the UK to hear evidence and to listen to views of members of the public. 'The Group wants to know the views of the public on this important issue,' said Sir William. The next meeting takes place on Thursday 20 January 2000 in Cardiff at 19:00 in: The Lecture Theatre Sir William is available for news media interviews. Please make arrangements with his PA, Isa MacLean, on +44 (0)1382 425562. Press Release IEGMP/P5 |
